Hospice of Huntington is fortunate to have more than 200 community volunteers who help support our programs and services. Each volunteer has successfully completed a background check and comprehensive training program, allowing to safely and compassionately work with out patients and families.
All volunteers must complete and submit an application. Once we receive and review the information, you will be contacted to schedule an interview with our Volunteer Services staff. Below are some examples of current volunteer opportunities.
Patient Volunteers provide support to patients and their families with particular care to provide relief to caregivers. You might sit with a patient while the caregiver runs errands, goes to the doctor, or just takes a much-needed break.
Bereavement Volunteers provide telephone calls to family members who wish to have someone to talk to about their grief. These volunteers can work out of their own homes.
Office Volunteers provide clerical assistance supporting a wide variety of areas throughout the hospice organization. A short orientation is required.
Clergy Volunteers provide spiritual support to patients and families. These individuals have a specialized training program and must be ordained ministers.
Fundraising Volunteers assist the Development Department in raising funds for Hospice of Huntington. Hospice accepts patients, regardless of ability to pay.
Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House Volunteers provide telephone support as receptionists at the facility.
Chords of Comfort Volunteers use music and singing as a way to soothe and comfort patients and families at the bedside.
Volunteer Services offers a comprehensive volunteer training program which many have called a "life-changing experience." The training program prepares our volunteers to work in various areas of hospice services. Volunteers are taught a variety of communication skills to deal with patients and family members as well as how to provide comfort care. In addition, not only do volunteers receive a working knowledge of the history and philosophy of the modern hospice movement, they also undergo training in the mission and vision of Hospice of Huntington.
Following the training, volunteers who work with patients and families may volunteer a maximum of four hours per week. For other volunteers, the amount of time dedicated toward volunteering is unrestricted. We remain flexible and understand that each of us may have professional and personal commitments which can impact time available for volunteering.
Hospice of Huntington is grateful for each and every volunteer who gives his or her time to our organization. A great deal of personal work is involved in the training program, including knowing one's limits and acknowledging beliefs about death and dying. Office volunteers and others participate in an interview and brief orientation process and do not need to attend the patient care volunteer training program.
